Thunder boomers and lightning streaks

May 30, 2012 - Author: Jenn

Around 3:30am this morning, a loud and bright thunderstorm rolled into our sleepy little town. Needless to say, our kitties didn’t like the noise because the three of them were on me like a blanket. The storm continued throughout the morning, and subsided a bit around 8:00am. Then, every couple of minutes, thunder loudly crashed. These kinds of storms are strange to me because the thunder crashes are usually spread far apart. This was one crash after another until around 11:00am.

Luckily, we didn’t lose power. My broadband Internet connection, though, has a very LOW reception right now due to the heavy rain and thick cloud cover. I had no reception at all when I attempted work first thing this morning. So, because I’ve gotten a late start, I’m planning to work late into the night in order to keep everything straight and meet my deadlines on time. I can tell the sun wants to come out, though, because the clouds are brightening.

In the meantime, though, I’m going to close the blinds and turn on lights to create my own “sunlit” environment. Winds are picking up, and the heavy rain has turned into light misting. This kind of gloomy weather beckons me to sleep, but I can’t. It’s Tuesday, yes, but it feels like Monday!

Still working through computer issues . . .

- Author: Jenn

. . . but most of them are resolved. I still can’t access one website I need (and it’s an important one, too), and my computer is alien to this machine. The plug and play feature works on my laptop, though, so this is weird to me. I checked drivers…nothing. I’m working with old machines – a six year old laptop, and a seven year old desktop. So, it’s frustrating. My software is twelve years old, too, so I’ve been running all updates and patches I can find. I’m a trouble-shooter by nature, so it’s bothering me I can’t fix EVERYTHING and get these machines to do what I want. I’m glad I can get online to handle tasks, though, so I’ll catch up on those things tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ll continue updating and getting things back to (somewhat) normal.

Computer hell!

May 26, 2012 - Author: Jenn

Hello, dear readers!

I’ve been stuck in computer hell since yesterday . . . once I figure out the problem, and I will, guest blog posts and book reviews will begin popping in later today.

Stay tuned!

Scaling back on social media . . .

- Author: Jenn

. . . or am I? I made a conscious choice to scale back on social media in order to place concentrated effort on my creative projects, as well as focus on a streamlined work schedule. My husband and I have specific goals set and, in order to achieve them, income goals must be part of the mix. While I love interaction with writers and other creatives throughout my workday, it’s too easy to get caught up in chatter. Sometimes we’re brainstorming, sometimes we’re venting, and sometimes we’re sharing leads. The conversations, for the most part, are productive and do have helpful additions to many facets of my life . . . but . . .

I have to scale back a bit. I’ll still share information, blog posts, resources, and work leads as often as I always have. However, my regular banter is reducing. As part of implementing this change, I culled back my Twitter following list. It’s still large, but not nearly as large as it was before I made the reduction. I did the same thing on Facebook, as well. My lists on LinkedIn.com and Pinterest.com remain the same, but that’s only because I never see interaction on either of these sites – I use them primarily for sharing.

As we approach the summer months, life in the Greenleaf household is going to be BUSY. I’ll have three kids begging for attention, which is fine because I’m not going to ignore them. However, finding the work and family balance is tricky unless I’m organized and effectively spending my time. That’s where pulling back on social media plays another role. I blogged about this decision when it originally came to fruition on The Ghost Writer: Fear of the Pen . . . but . . . I didn’t REALLY start putting it into action until yesterday. This is a positive thing, I think, and will lead to more positive things! I’ve place intention behind this decision, and am looking forward to the ultimate outcome!

Have you ever had to pull back from social media?
